About Zotero

Zotero is a free, open source citation manager originally developed by the Center for History and New Media at the George Mason University and now developed by the Corporation for Digital Scholarship.

What Zotero Does

Zotero (pronounced "zoh-TAIR-oh") is software that collects, manages, and cites research sources. It's easy to use, connects to the various web browsers where you do your work, and best of all it's free. Zotero allows you to attach PDFs, notes and images to your citations, organize them into collections for different projects, and create bibliographies using Word, Google Docs, or OpenOffice.

Because Zotero is open source and has a large user community, thousands of bibliographic styles are available and updated regularly.

Getting and Installing Zotero

Zotero runs on these operating systems: Mac, IOS, Linux, and Windows. Installation only takes a few seconds.

To install, go to https://www.zotero.org/ and click the red "Download" button. Click "Install Now" and follow the instructions.

If you have any problems, check the Zotero installation page.

The Microsoft Word/Google Docs integrations will automatically install when you download and install Zotero/Zotero Connectors. These allow you to easily cite items from your Zotero library in your papers.

2.  Choose "Settings" from the upper right-hand corner of the window.

3.  Within your Zotero Settings, choose the "Account" tab.  Next, scroll down to add an additional email to your existing Zotero account (for example, an @hope.edu email).  Finish by choosing "Add"  You should receive a confirmation email in your 1Hope email account verifying your new email account.  Click on the confirmation link in that email.

4. Once you have added an 1Hope email address to your Zotero account, your storage settings should automatically be updated to reflect the unlimited storage space you receive as a member of the Hope College Zotero Institutional Storage plan.
