ebooks at Hope College: FAQ and Searching

A guide for using Hope's ebook collections

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I view Hope's ebooks?

You can view Hope's ebooks directly on your computer, both on campus and off. Viewing most titles off campus requires logging into your Hope account. Ebooks are viewed directly within the vendor's platform in a browser or in a downloadable format (e.g. PDF, EPUB).

Do I have to be online to view Hope's ebooks?

Some ebook vendors allow you to download their titles for a limited "check out" period, usually using Adobe Digital Editions.  Some also allow for full or partial downloads as PDFs.  In order to use this functionality, you may need to register for a personal account with the ebook vendor and download the appropriate software.

Can I view Hope ebooks on my portable device?

Most of Hope's ebooks can be viewed on many portable devices.  Generally speaking, they are more likely to be usable on tablets and smartphones, rather than Nooks, Kindles, and other dedicated e-readers.

Can I print ebooks?

The printing allowances vary from vendor to vendor.  Most of the vendors have a limit that allows you to print a specific number of chapters or a certain number of pages.  Some vendors, like Springer, allow you to print as many PDF chapters as you need.  However, be Green and print as little as possible!

Searching for ebooks

Search for ebooks using Hope Primo.

Basic Search

Perform a search and then use Primo's facets to limit to ebooks by selecting "Available online" under Show Only and then "Books" under Resource Type

The filters have now been applied and the results should be limited to ebooks:

Selecting and Viewing an ebook Title

Click on the title or "Available Online" for the ebook you want to view.  When the record for the title appears click on the green box in the View Online: Full text availability section.  (Sometimes more than one ebook provider will be listed.)  The ebook vendor's platform page will open and the ebook can be viewed.  (Each ebook vendor's platform will vary.)
