Google Scholar @ Hope College: Home

Google Scholar

Stand on the shoulders of giants

About

Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Google Scholar can help you find relevant work across the world of scholarly research, and is best used as a supplement to discipline-specific scholarly indexes and databases.

To help facilitate access to the scholarly literature from Google Scholar, Van Wylen Library sends Google a file of our library holdings each week. These holdings are incorporated into Scholar search results through Library Links.

Researchers can also create Scholar Profiles to highlight their scholarly publications.

Utilizing Google Scholar

For on-campus users, Google Scholar results include links to either full text resources (via Full-Text @ Hope College) or links to Request It @ Hope College.  The Request It link provides a quick way to submit interlibrary loan requests for items to which we do not have access, as well as quick access to an email help form (i.e. Report a Problem link).

Following are examples of results from Google Scholar:

If full text is not available, the (double arrow) icon will expand to provide options to request the item (e.g. Request it @ Hope College).

For users off-campus, their Google Scholar settings need to be edited to link to our holdings:

Users need to select the Settings link from the men () at the upper left of the search screen, select Library Links. then type Hope College.  From the resulting list of libraries, please select Hope College Van Wylen Library - Full-Text @ Hope College.

  1. Go to Google Scholar
  2. Click on My Profile
  3. Login to your personal Google account (or create one if you don’t already have one). Google recommends you use a personal account (not your 1Hope account) so you can easily keep your profile if you move institutions. Also, Hope College's contract with Google does not include Google Profiles.
  4. Complete the form (you need to include your university email address for inclusion in Google Scholar search results) and click Next
  5. Google scholar will provide you a list of author profiles (Groups), which it thinks belong to you:
    • Select your name from the list
    • Click on Articles to select individual articles. Scroll through the list and deselect any publications which are not yours
    • If any of your publications are missing, click in the search box and perform a search in Google Scholar to add each of your remaining articles. Tick the box next to articles to add them to your selection list.
    • Click on Selected link on the top right corner of the screen to see all your selected articles
    • Click on the arrow on the top of the screen to go to the next page
  6. Choose whether you want Google to automatically add new publications to your profile or whether you want to do so manually
    • Allowing Google to automatically add new publications can save you time but may erroneously add publications that aren’t yours (especially if you have a common name)- you also always have the option of manually searching for and adding publications to your profile
  7. Select your profile visibility and email alert settings, then click Done.
  8. Review your profile, upload a photo, and go to your university email to click on the verification link
  9. Once your profile is public, it appears in Google Scholar search results

What should you do if you created an account with credentials from another university or with your 1Hope account?

  1. Create a new Google Scholar account with your personal Gmail. You should receive an email from Google stating that you have a duplicate Google Scholar account, asking you to choose which one you want to make public. Only one profile can be public.
  2. To delete your now private, 1Hope profile, go to Google Scholar
    1. click on "Settings"
    2. click on "Account":
    3. click on "Delete or recover your Scholar account." From there, you'll have to affirm that you are sure you'd like to delete the account, and that you understand you have 30 days to change your mind. Check all the boxes, then click "Delete account":
  3. You may not be able to delete the old profile.
