Sustainable Collections Project: Lists

The SC project is a large-scale evidenced based deselection process to identify low or no use print monographs that could be removed from the collection. The project also identifies monographs that are low-use but need to be preserved (rare).

Instructions for Reviewing Withdrawal Candidates

Faculty who are interested in reviewing lists of library withdrawal candidates should download the spreadsheet for a specific call number range. Spreadsheets can be sorted by author or title to look for seminal works. The reason for retaining a book should be Indicated in the column after the title, on the spreadsheet. Keep in mind the reasons a book is on this list (published before 2000, 0 or 1 use since 1989 and is held by more than 50 academic libraries in the U.S. and by more than 3 peer/MeL libraries in Michigan)

  1.  = Classic Work
  2.  = Major Author
  3.  = Important Press
  4.  = Supports Emerging Curriculum
  5.  = Part of a Set
  6.  = Local History

Send the spreadsheet via email to Kelly Jacobsma or David O'Brien.

Preservation Candidates

Books that are flagged for preservation are titles that are held by fewer than 5 academic libraries in the United States and/or no other academic library in Michigan.  Decisions about moving books to the Hope College Rare Books Collection will be made by the Director of Libraries. Books of local and historical importance will be protected.

Preservation Candidate Lists

Preservation candidates lists are created by call number range.  Decisions about moving a preservation candidate title to the Rare Books Collection will be made by the  Director of Libraries.
