ART 242 - Researching Contemporary Artists: Articles

Why Articles?

For contemporary artists, articles are an important source of information and analysis.  Many contemporary artists have not been creating work long enough, or are not well known enough to merit a book being published about them.  Articles are sometimes the only source of published information on them.  Also, articles are an important venue for analysis of an artist, making them a key resource for your own analysis.

Art and Architecture Source

Art and Architecture Source is the best database we have at Hope for locating articles on contemporary artists.  It searches for articles in over 600 art-related journals and magazines, including in-depth research articles, reviews of gallery exhibits they participated in, interviews, and shorter announcements of exhibitions. Even these shorter forms of writing can be valuable as they are written in established art magazines by influential art critics. They may also be helpful primary sources if they include the voice of the artist.

Tips

Search primarily by your artist's name or the movements associated with them. You can try to include the work of art but this may over-limit or only bring back images of the work.

If seeing too many unrelated articles, try changing the search dropdown to search your artists name as a Subject

Search for Henry Taylor as a Subject

Look for the "Find Full Text" link to check for where to find the whole article.  If we don't own it, you can easily order it through InterLibrary Loan.

Researching an artist who was active pre-1980?  Search Art and Architecture Source along with Art Index Retrospective which will inform you about pre-1980 publications.  You can search them jointly by clicking the "Choose Databases" link and selecting both.
