Source Sleuthing and Getting Started

Finding Subject-Specific Information Faster

Databases are kind of like streaming services. The library subscribes to a bunch of different ones, and they all have a different set of content. Each has a slightly different interface to interact with, but they share a similar organization system.

If we want to watch a Marvel movie, we know searching Disney Plus is probably the first place we should look, not Apple TV. In the same way, if we're hunting for journal articles, we'll want to have a decent idea how to use each service and which one might have the type of content we're looking for. Needing academic sources for history, we might start with JSTOR rather than PubMed.

Many database providers contain multiple collections. It's a good idea to know the major databases in your area of study. For example, EBSCOhost contains both the nursing database CINHAL and the communication database Communication & Mass Media Complete. Find your subject databases here!
