EZproxy: Home

Authenticating to Van Wylen Library resources from off-campus.

What is EZproxy and How Does it Work?

EZproxy is the means by Hope College students, faculty, and staff can access databases, journals, and ebooks from off-campus using their 1Hope credentials.  When on-campus, the resource will see the request come through a campus IP address and know that the user has permission to use the resource. But, since our databases and journals are only licensed to Hope students, faculty, and staff, the resource has to know that an off-campus user is licensed to access the product and EZproxy is the key to that process.

From off campus, EZProxy makes this authentication process simple - logging in with your 1Hope credentials runs your request through our proxy server so that the resources will see a campus IP address when the resource is accessed.  When doing research from off-campus, you should only have to login once unless you close your browser or clear your cookies - after logging in to EZProxy, the library website should treat you as though you were on campus.

EZproxy Bookmarklet

The EZproxy browser bookmarklet adds the library's EZproxy prefix to a URL. When you are not on the campus network click on the bookmarklet to access licensed library resources that you've found via non-library sites such as Google, Google Scholar, email links, Twitter, etc.

To take advantage of EZproxy you will need to make sure your browser is configured to:

  • Allow pop-up windows.
  • Accept third-party cookies.
  • Enable JavaScript.

The browser bookmarklet can be added to iOS, Android and most browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and IE.

  • Drag the Hope EZproxy bookmarklet link below to your browser's bookmarks toolbar.
  • Click on the bookmarklet after you land on a licensed resource that you've reached via a non-Hope site.
