Fines & Fees

  Overdue Fines

If an item is not returned by its due date, overdue fines start to build up. For regular books, there are no overdue fines for the first 30 days unless another patron has a hold on the item. We have stricter fines for valuable and high-use items like technology, since it's essential that they be returned on time.

Type of Material Fine Rate Maximum Fine
Reference Books $5 per day $50
Videos / DVDs $1 per day $10
CDs $1 per day $10
4-day Equipment Loans $5 per day $50
24-hour Equipment Loans $0.50 per hour $36

                              Replacement Fees

If an item still has not been returned 30 days after its due date, the patron is charged a replacement fee and the item status in Alma changes to "Lost."

Type of Material Minimum Replacement Fee
Books $65
Videos / DVDs $65
CDs $25
Cameras $515
PC Laptops $1015
Macbook Laptops $1515

If a patron promptly returns the charged item in good condition, the replacement cost is waived and a processing fee remains. So for a $65 book replacement, $60 would be waived and $5 would remain.

  • A billed item will suspend the borrowing privileges of any Hope student, faculty and staff member. Hope students with outstanding overdue fines and replacement bills will have these charges billed to their student accounts.
  • Once the item is billed to their account at Business Services, Hope students have until the end of the semester after the item was due to return the item in good condition and receive a refund for the replacement cost (minus the overdue fine). After that, no refunds will be given. If the lost material is needed prior to the end of the following semester, the library will purchase a replacement and no refund will be given.
  • A guest patron will have their borrowing privileges suspended whenever $10 or more is owed the library. Guest patrons must pay all fines and fees at the library.
