Renewals

  Renewals

Items that are eligible for renewal are automatically renewed by Alma. One renewal is allowed for books, and renewals are always for the same amount of time as the original check-out. So, a 4-week check out can be renewed once for 4 weeks. Patrons can view their items online by logging into their Primo account. When patrons call the Circulation Desk or come to the library to ask us to renew their items for them, it's often because their item can no longer be renewed.

Items cannot be renewed if:

  • The item is a piece of Technology, a DVD, or is on Course Reserve. These items are not renewable, and the patron must return the item.
  • The item has already reached its renewal limit of 1 renewal. The patron may return the item and check it back out as long as no one else has requested the item.
  • The item is overdue or billed for replacement. The patron must return the item.
  • Another patron has requested the item. The patron must return the item.
  • The patron's account is blocked due to too many fines. The patron must pay their fines before they can check out or renew any items.

Renewing Hope-owned Library Items

1. Look up the patron's account in Alma under Manage Patron Services. If the patron is present, scan their ID. If they are calling on the phone, type their name into the search bar and make sure you have the correct patron before clicking Go.

2. Click on the Loan Display drop-down menu and choose All Loans. This will show you a list of every item that the patron has checked out.

3. Check the box next to the titles that you would like to renew, then click Renew Selected. (Never use Change Due Date).

4. If the renewal was successful, a green box will appear in the upper right corner of the screen, a green check mark will appear next to the renewed titles, and you will see the due date of each title has been extended.

5. If the renewal was not successful, a red box will appear in the upper right corner of the screen and a red X will appear next to the title you attempted to renew.

6. If the item(s) could not be renewed, it's likely for one of the following reasons:

  • The item is a piece of Technology, a DVD, or is on Course Reserve. The patron must return the item.
  • The item has already reached its renewal limit. The patron may return the item and check it back out.
  • The item is overdue or billed for replacement. The patron must return the item.
  • Another patron has requested the item. The patron must return the item.
  • The patron's account is blocked due to too many fines. The patron must pay their fines before they can check out or renew any items.
